How to make baby formula thicker?

Wednesday, September 30th, 2009
gatattoogal asked:

My son is 3 months and 2 weeks old. He has acid reflux. He is on 3 different meds and has 10 tablespoons of rice cereal added to 4 ounces of formula. He is also weighing in at 13lb. and 9oz. I am scared he gaining too much weight at one time. I have recently talked to a friend of mine whose little girl has the same problem. She uses a product called ThickIt to thicken up her babys milk and juices. It has no flavor and will not make them gain weight. I was wanting to know if someone else has heard of the product and if someone else has used it. I was also wanting to know if anyone knows of anything else I could use to thicken the formula that they have used with success. THANK YOU and PLEASE SERIOUS ANSWERS ONLY!
The reason he has to thicken his formula is because of the choking from acid reflux. He does not have the projectile vomiting reflux he has the reflux that comes up just enough to be inhaled down into his lungs and he chokes. You can here the liquids in his lungs when this happens. He sounds like he is congested all the time. The doc says it is where is refluxing all the time. His upper GI showed that for every swalllow he take his liquids come up 4 to 5 times before he can get the second swallow down. I also have a friend of mine whose daughter is also handicaped and can not tolerate liquids to good and she uses it also for her liquids.
The formula that is for acid reflux is not thick enough and no I don’t want to thicken his formula because my friend does. I am following everything his doctor has told me to do I was just wanting to know if anyone knew anything about it.

Wednesday, September 30th, 2009
LutherTM98 asked:

I am due in 10 days exactly with my twin girls. Got the HE baby detergent that is all natural, went green with everything in the house it seems. Less chemicals, more natural. Well, my aunt just got me a gift card for BabiesRUs & I need to purchase baby skincare products, shampoo, conditioner, body wash, lotion, diaper cream ect…I need to know what brand is good & effective yet gentle & is not loaded with chemicals. I have eczema & my husband breaks out with regular soaps. I can use Clinique’s Cream wash, & thier lotion that has shea butter in it & my hubby tends to borry it & it works no problem. He has very sensative skin & tide, all, wisk ect does not work with him. I use 7th Generation & woolite on our clothes now. I am going to assume that my babies will be sensative too since both parents are, so any suggestions on skincare for the babies? Johnson & Johnson make Aveeno & I read the ingredients in both, they are about the same. Huggies not too different. Any suggestions

How to start being eco friendly?

Tuesday, September 29th, 2009
melaniecampbell asked:

I would like to know how I can jump start being more eco friendly as a family. I am already known by friends and family as a “treehugger” because I make an effort to be environmentally friendly.
What I do so far is this- I use cloth grocery bags.
I recycle all plastic glass and metals.(we use cardboard and paper as firestarters in our firepit).
I have a compost bin in our yard so I don’t fill bags with compostable stuff.
We closely watch our heating and cooling settings.
We use biodegradable cat litter.
I use eco friendly cleaning products.
I walk everywhere in town I can walk.

Im 7 months pregnant, trying to figure out more ways to be eco friendly, how to have an eco friendly baby- I will be using reuseable diapers (www.gdiapers.com), making my own baby food, nursing not formula feeding, using natural baby products.
I am looking for more ideas on little things to do around the house to reuse, recycle, and be even more eco minded. Tips appreciated! On a small budget!

Male Guests At The Baby Shower Party

Tuesday, September 29th, 2009
Janet R. asked:

Baby shower is traditionally thrown to moms-to-be, however, if you are a guy and opt to attend a baby shower party, you might think twice what it would be look like. Most men don’t know or don’t care about how when or why these baby showers even exists. Our world is constantly changing and more men are taking part in some as of the women’s world. It has been even very obvious that men can cook and clean the house, and now is the time for men to perhaps attend baby shower parties that are typically a women’s thing.

For a man who have never attended a baby shower party, it can be a bit daunting to attend a party without knowing what to expect. Surprisingly, there are several ideas that will help you in attending such shower without hesitations. You might mingle to some women you know during the shower, but be mindful not to over do it.

Before getting to the shower party, you have one task that you need to consider and that is to find a shower gift. It has been a tradition for the guests to bring gifts and that simply means you too will need to present a gift for the baby, the parent or both. But the big question goes here, what gifts should you give.? However, this is quite no longer an issue today for you can always seek help using the Internet, which has been a lifesaver more than once. All you need to do is type the keyword ”baby shower gifts” in the browser, and you will then find thousands of online stores selling baby shower gifts.

However, the immeasurable variety of selection can cause a stress for you. With lots of great choices to choose from, you will most likely have a hard time time making up your mind. Should you go for a Baby and Dad Jewelry Set, Sport- themed accessories, or a personalized baby gift basket that would definitely wow not only the dad but the guests as well. It has been always a safe idea to think of wonderful gifts to impressing the people without overdoing it, but of course you have to consider also the range of prices that you can only afford.

If you decide to shop online, make sure that the gifts you have ordered will be delivered a few days prior to the shower party. It is totally unnecessary to make a last minute shopping online. But if you opt to have a careful look to each choices you want to buy, you can always visit baby shops, toy stores or jewelry stores. These places will be able to help you find something that can be used as a perfect gift for a baby shower party but don’t expect to pay cheaper amount than if you done shopping online and in time.

Here are the top choices you may opt to choose from: Personalized infant clothing; baby blankets; a baby furniture; toys; feeding supplies; bathing supplies; a baby monitor; baby travel gear; and many other useful baby items that most parents would appreciate. Having them personalize is a great way to show how special they are to you.

How to Choose the Perfect Gift for the New Baby Girl

Sunday, September 27th, 2009
Mary Westbrook asked:

It’s always a delight to know a new baby girl has been born into the family, and it’s always an impulse to buy something nice for her and the new parents. It can get pretty tricky when buying stuff for the new baby girl - how can you be sure which gifts would be appreciated more? There’s also the nagging feeling about walking into the baby shower with the exact same gift as another guest! Needless to say, original baby gift ideas are pretty hard to come by.

Thankfully, you can give gift baskets instead of single gift items. Gift baskets are combinations of closely-related gift items placed in a suitable container, usually a basket. You can prepare and give gift baskets for all occasions, and the arrival of a new baby girl is a pretty good occasion. A well-prepared gift basket for the little girl and her parents would be greatly appreciated, and it’s a novel way of saying how much you care for the new family.

Pink is the most popular color for baby girls, so make sure you make the color a central theme of your gift basket. You can also use other feminine colors, like yellow, or neutral colors, like purple, green, and white. Also remember that pastel shades are always better than strong ones, since they convey a feeling of calm and quiet - something you’d like the baby’s new room to be. If you’ve seen what the baby’s room looks like, you can also get a better idea of what kind of stuff would go well with the interior design.

The most common things to fill baby girl gift baskets are, of course, baby items. Now every baby needs diapers, and preparing a little “diaper tower” gift basket can be a wonderful idea. Not only will you be sure that the items will be well-used, but you’ll be saving the new parents some money down the line, too. You can also throw in some colorful new bibs, pins, toys, and other baby items to spruce up the gift basket.

Toys are also great items to give to a new baby girl - any self-respecting nursery for a little girl should be lined with stuffed toys. Stuffed toys also make for good company in the crib, and even in the bed as the little girl grows up. Three stuffed animals, one larger than the other two, or a collection of tiny ones are good combinations. Just make sure the animals are related to each other - you might want to give a “farm” or “pony” or “puppy show” theme to the gift basket this way.

Babies spend most of their day asleep, so it’s also a good idea to fill your gift basket with items the little girl can use while sleeping. Some comfy body suits and other sleepwear, mittens, caps, and some dolls for company would fit in a “sleepy” gift basket well, in addition to some bottles, mobiles, and maybe a musical toy to help lull her to sleep.

Another good idea for a gift basket theme is “bath time.” It might take a while for babies to get used to bath time, and some baby bath items like washcloths, shampoo, towels, and rubber ducky can make her like getting squeaky clean. To make things a little different, fill the basket with “travel-sized” versions of these items - it’s a friendly gesture and suggestion to the parents to take the little girl out every now and then.

When picking out a container for your gift items, remember that baby girl gift baskets aren’t limited to the traditional wicker basket. You can pick other containers that may go better with your gift basket’s theme, like baby bathtubs, hampers, or little perambulators (in case she likes to play mommy as she grows older). These containers can be considered a part of the gift collection itself, since they’re pretty useful.

One way to make the gift basket more appealing to the little girl’s parents is to include something for them, as well. They’ll very much appreciate a good bottle of wine or apple cider, and maybe even some gourmet food items that the mother can munch on to keep up her strength - after all, taking care of a baby is hard work!

The dad will probably also need a little help taking care of his new daughter. Men are by nature bad at changing diapers, so giving him a few books about caring for his little girl will definitely make things easier for him - and, of course, for the mom, too.

Gift baskets are always best when prepared with your own hands, but admittedly not all of us have that “creative streak.” If this sounds like you, then maybe you can visit a gift basket shop instead. Gift basket shops almost always have pre-made gift baskets for all occasions on their store shelves, and baby girl gift baskets are pretty popular. You can simply pick one that suits the new baby girl and her parents.

To make even a store-bought gift basket special, you can ask the gift basket shop to personalize it. Some of the better shops have personalizing services, often knitting the baby girl’s name onto dolls, stuffed letters, or sleepwear. They can also customize gift baskets for you - all you need is to give them your ideas on what kinds of items to fill the basket with, and they’ll come up with some pretty on-target suggestions for you.

If by any chance you can’t make it to the baby shower, some of the better shops can also deliver the baskets to the couple’s doorstep. Ask them to make the delivery during the baby shower itself - they’ll need the date and time - and you’ll be making a pleasant impact on the party even when you’re not around.

The beauty about preparing your gift basket is that by presenting more than one gift item in a pretty basket, you don’t add to its “Ah!” factor, but multiply it. And when the other guests ask where you got it, you can shrug and say, “I made it.” And everyone, especially the parents, will love you for it.

All-Natural Baby Care Products?

Friday, September 25th, 2009
Busy Mommy of 3 asked:

Do you plan to use all-natural baby care products? Or if you have children, do you already use them? Any recommendations on good all-natural baby care products?

I know I should put this in Newborn & Baby section but I always get good answers in this category, more people I guess!
Johnson & Johnson is horrible! There is so many harsh chemicals in their baby care products that are not needed. I have used method baby, it smells wonderful! I have been using Arbonne’s line for baby care products but they are expensive and I am looking for something new!
I have not tried Burt’s Bees Baby products, I will check them out. Good prices at drugstore.com!

Helpful Reminders When Buying a Baby Crib Bedding Set

Friday, September 25th, 2009
Haden Kaliso asked:

New parents are often lack of knowledge and experience especially when buying a baby crib bedding set that is right for their infant. It’s not easy to decide whether the crib bedding set would be perfect for the infant’s needs or not as there are wide options to choose from. Always consider the most important thing when buying, it’s the fact that not only the looks count but it should be worth your hard-earned money at least. Aside from it’s appearance, make sure that the baby crib bedding set that you will buy will offer more advantages to your baby because he or she will be using it for the first few years of his or her life.

You will find baby crib bedding sets, that often comes with baby items and necessities, available in most retails stores in your place. You can also find affordable yet high quality items in retail places such as Walmart or Sears near you. There you can decide which items are important and worth to buy that will fit your budget. Mostly, you can find the best offer that you will need for your baby in such places, at affordable prices. You can also compare items before buying and decide which of these items offer its best purpose. If you find that none of these items meet your needs and liking, you can also try checking other department stores near you. Although you may find that they offer items with prices a little bit higher than those retail places, it’s more possible for you to find items that you will prefer the most from these stores.

It is not necessary to buy expensive baby items in order to meet your baby’s needs, as long as it depends on your own preferences and reasonable to buy. Branded items are known to be more expensive than others, might as well, the most important is the quality of the items that you will get for your baby. Of course, aesthetic value will be great but not as always if it will compromise quality or even the safety of your child. Baby items that are more functional should be given more preference than those items that only gives additional decoration. Baby items such as baby crib  bedding sets, cribs, mattresses come with their own  importance of giving your little one’s a care so it’s best for you to consider the necessary things before buying because we all don’t want to compromise our child’s safety.

Creative Baby Shower Gifts Under $25

Thursday, September 24th, 2009
Mandie Klein asked:

Creative baby shower gifts are aplenty and within budget. You don’t have to break your bank just to get adorable little enchanted fairy tale carriage favor boxes to impress your friends who are going to be mommies soon. Read on for more creative ideas for baby shower gifts.

Getting Creative and Getting the Kudos

Shopping for creative baby shower gifts can be challenging, even to the most experienced moms and dads going to a baby shower or being given one. Why? They all experience that Jell-O in the arm feeling when faced with the daunting task of selecting that one gift that will bring on appreciative smiles. As parents, they want to give something both beautiful and practical, just like what they wanted when they got tons of baby gifts during the baby showers hosted for them.

Be creative. Shopping for baby gifts can be interesting. True, traditional baby shower gifts are appropriate for the occasion, but you can pull in a fast one by making these gifts truly creative, bearing your personal touch. How?

Traditional items like gift baskets can contain personalized bibs, booties, and even onesies. Hand-knitted blankets, picture frames, and piggy banks score a win when personalized, but what if you’re broke and looking at $25? You can’t welcome a special bundle of joy with a ho-hum gift that will gather dust or stay unused for years.

Lovely Baby Shower Gifts That Won’t Cost You

Don’t despair. There are baby shower gifts below $20 that won’t have you losing face when the mom-to-be opens the colorful package. Here are some creative baby shower gifts you’ll be happy to give:

* Beautiful and personalized burp cloths

* Gift sets with T-shirts, tank tops, pants, bib, cap and booties

* Charming keepsake boxes

* World’s Greatest Mommy things (e.g. cheese grater)

* Personalized baby mugs

* Four-piece gift sets

* Personalized baby pacifiers

* Bottle holders

* Monogrammed diaper bags

* Tot’s dish sets

Don’t be afraid to give non-traditional or creative baby shower gifts below $20. Clue in to items for baby travel, feeding and bath items, and items for a sick baby, just in case. You’ll also do well with breastfeeding support items for the mom such as ****** pads and lanolin ointment.

Baby travel items make for creative baby shower gifts - rubber duckies, disposable wash cloths, infant toiletry, and some goodies for the mom. Don’t forget to tuck in some pain relievers for both mom and dad; they’ll need these while on the road. You may want to try out those sick baby items that include a baby thermometer. This will be greeted with sighs of relief because moms-to-be often forget these essential items.

The Mommy/Daddy Agenda

Don’t get it wrong. Baby showers are also the time to pamper the moms-to-be. So if you are stumped with what to give for a baby who has yet to make an appearance, focus on the mom and dad. They’ll lap up all the attention you’ll shower on them with practical items like nifty bottle openers, key chains, votive candle holders, and scented bath oils.

Also, creative baby shower gifts do not mean you’ll have to get stuck with so-so items that have been used to death, or the usual baby shower gifts that are beyond your budget. Baby shower gifts under $25 can save you sleepless nights. So get up and go creative. Spoil mom and dad and the baby, too.
